What Is Hardscaping?

If you’re like many people, you have likely heard of the term “hardscaping” but may not be quite sure what it is. If that’s the case, have no fear because you’re not alone. Many people refer to elements that are technically considered to be hardscaping as landscaping, and although there is a difference between the two terms, they work in conjunction with one another to create outdoor spaces that are meant to be enjoyed.

The primary difference between the two is whether any particular feature is living or not. So, for example, if you are designing your backyard space and you are planning for the inclusion of flower beds filled with colorful flowers or interesting shrubs, or you are figuring out where to plant some beautiful shade trees, all of those components are considered to be part of your landscaping.

If, on the other hand, as you plan out your overall exterior design, you are also planning for the inclusion of an attractive patio, a meandering walkway made from stone, or even a retaining wall to set off the beauty of your flowers and plants, then you are dealing with the realm of hardscape design. Together, all of these individual elements create the beauty and functionality you desire. The only difference is that some of the features are living (such as flowers, shrubs, trees and grass) and the other elements are made from materials that are non-living, such as stone, brick, travertine, concrete or tile.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter what you call each component of your overall outdoor design – as long as you get what you want and the various elements come together seamlessly, the terminology is irrelevant. We just wanted to clarify for you what the differences in terms meant, just in case you were confused and were looking for an easy-to-understand definition.

So, now that you know the difference, how can hardscape elements enhance your property, whether it is a residential home or a commercial location? That’s simple! Aside from the fact that many of these elements add visual interest and beauty to your outdoor spaces, they also offer a great deal of enhanced functionality. For example, who wouldn’t want to enjoy an expansive brick or paver patio outdoors where you can sit, relax and entertain, or simply enjoy the splendid beauty of the surrounding landscape? If you enjoy cooking and eating outdoors, you may even want to add an outdoor kitchen into the mix, which can not only house your barbecue grill, but can also include areas for prep work, storage and dining.

Whether your primary focus is on beauty or functionality, and whether you enjoy lively entertainment or tranquility and relaxation while spending times outdoors, incorporating hardscape design elements into your overall exterior space can provide you with the backyard of your dreams.
